Testing is easy: a sensitivity test is performed first by spraying a dilute version of the test solution into the hood without a respirator being worn to make sure the person can detect the taste. Then, while wearing a respirator, a sweet or bitter test solution is sprayed into the hood. If the wearer doesn't detect the taste of the test agent, the respirator fit is acceptable. If the taste is detected, a second test is performed after readjusting the respirator. If that test also fails, it may indicate the need for a different size or model of respirator.
