Metrological traceability
In the context of measurement science, traceable, when referring to metrological traceability, is the property of a measurement result in which the result can be related to a national measurement reference through a documented unbroken chain of calibrations, each contributing to the measurement uncertainty. Many global organizations regulate standards and measurement. In the US, there is ISO, ISO/IEC and NIST. The function of these organizations is to provide a common language to measure and evaluate performance, ensure measurement traceability, calibration standards, and more to promote innovation and industry fair competitiveness, and to protect consumers and the environment.[1]
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has defined traceability in ISO 9000 as the ability to trace the history, application, use and location of an item or its characteristics through recorded identification data. ISO 9000 is the most common quality standard. It is recognized by more than 120 countries. For a company, having a quality program in place that adheres to ISO 9000 standards only assures that the company monitors and tracks its work to meet customer needs.
The ISO/IEC 17025 standard expands the quality portion of ISO 9000 to specifically address calibration and testing methods’ quality program—that the company maintains properly calibrated reference standards, and that its measurements can track back to what is called the metrology center in each country.
In the US, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is responsible for regulating measurements and standards, calibration services, and more. NIST traceable means that the equipment being used to calibrate your product meets NIST standards and has an audit paper trail back to the original equipment used to test to the highest accuracy possible. When an instrument is NIST-traceable calibrated, you are given a calibration certificate that identifies the standards used are traceable through NIST. It is a link in the traceability chain from the customer unit to NIST.
